Compared in depth
Both are homeschool science programs built around hands-on experiments, with parent-led elementary courses that spend a long stretch on one subject and textbooks that move students toward independent work in the older grades. The main difference is faith: Apologia says each course "is written from a Biblical worldview" and that "God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing in six days," while Pandia Press says REAL Science Odyssey is "free of religiously biased material."
Written by the Homebuilt team from both publishers’ own materials, checked September 2026. This is a description of the differences, not a recommendation of either program.

Apologia sells each elementary course as a Build-Your-Own Set. The textbook is required, and families add at least one more item, such as a Notebooking Journal (Junior for K to 3rd grade, Regular for 4th to 6th) or an audiobook. Apologia recommends one notebook per student. Each textbook includes access to online Book Extras with videos and further reading. The shop lists video, AutoGrade+, eBooks, and lab equipment as separate categories, and middle school, high school, self-paced online courses, and live classes are sold on their own.
Each Level 1 course is one consumable textbook: softcover with perforated pages in print, or a PDF eBook with a separate Student Pages file. It holds the readings, labs, instructor pages, a suggested weekly schedule, and supply lists by week. Extra Student Pages for more children are sold separately. Pandia says most lab supplies are household items, with a few to buy, plus a 3-ring binder, and that Home Science Tools sells supply kits. Level 2 splits each course into a textbook, workbook, and teacher guide, sold separately.

In the elementary years the parent teaches all K to 6 children together; Apologia says each course "is designed for multi-age family learning" and also works in a co-op. Textbooks are written directly to the student in a conversational tone, with hands-on experiments. The Notebooking Journal carries a suggested schedule of 2 days a week, which Apologia says can finish a course in as little as 28 weeks. Middle school shifts toward independent work: Apologia says most lessons take 30 to 45 minutes a day on a 4-day schedule.
Level 1 is parent-led. Pandia says the Chemistry 1 text "is designed to be read aloud," followed by labs that practice the scientific method, and that no science background is needed to teach it. A course runs 36 weeks at two science sessions a week. Lessons can be adapted by age, with the parent writing answers for younger children and older ones working more independently. In Level 2 the text is written to the student to learn independently, parents guide labs and discussion, and the teacher guide offers 2, 3, or 5 day pacing.

Apologia sells science from preschool through 12th grade. Its eight elementary courses (Astronomy, Botany, three Zoology courses, Earth Science, Anatomy and Physiology, and Chemistry and Physics) are for grades K to 6 and can be done in any order. Middle school has General Science (7th to 8th) and Physical Science (8th to 9th). High school offers college-prep Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Marine Biology, plus advanced courses and electives. Self-paced online courses and live classes, which meet weekly from August to May, are also offered.
REAL Science Odyssey covers grades K to 10 in two levels. Level 1 (K to 6) courses each carry their own grade range: Life (K to 2), Evolution Unit Study (K to 3), Astronomy and Earth & Environment (1 to 4), Chemistry and Biology (2 to 5), and Physics (3 to 6). Level 2 (grades 6 to 10) includes Biology, Earth & Environment, and Astronomy, plus The Stargazer's Notebook for grades 5 and up. Pandia's FAQ says many high school students use Biology 2 and Astronomy 2 successfully.

Basis: one elementary chemistry course for one child in print, as seen on the publisher's site in September 2026. Apologia's Chemistry and Physics textbook lists at $55.00 and its Notebooking Journal at $39.00, or $94.00 together; the Build-Your-Own Set was on sale at $84.60. The optional audiobook adds $18.00 at list, and each extra child needs another journal. The course has 14 lessons and pairs chemistry with physics, so its scope is not the same as a chemistry-only course. Prices change, so check the publisher for the current figure.
Same basis: REAL Science Odyssey Chemistry 1 (grades 2 to 5) listed at $87.99 in print and $52.99 as an eBook in September 2026, with no sale shown. The print book is a consumable textbook, so one child needs no separate workbook. Extra Student Pages for additional children listed at $23.99 as an eBook. Chemistry 1 is a 36-week, chemistry-only course, while Apologia's elementary course pairs chemistry with physics. Lab supplies are extra for both. Prices change, so check the publisher for the current figure.

Apologia says it works to "equip students and families to learn, live, and defend the Christian faith," and its approach page says it concludes that scientific evidence "points to the earth being young." It tends to fit Christian families who want science taught from that creation-based view, parents teaching several K to 6 children together, and students moving toward independent, college-prep textbooks or online classes in the upper grades. Apologia says parents without a science background can teach its middle school courses.
Pandia Press calls itself "the first secular homeschool publisher" and says its publications "do not posit religious beliefs as factual." Biology 2 has an entire unit on evolution. It tends to fit families who want secular, lab-centered science, a full year spent on one discipline, and material a parent can teach with no science background. Pandia says its courses adapt to multiple ages and serve homeschoolers, co-ops, and classrooms.

| What it is | A Christian science curriculum written from a biblical perspective in a conversational textbook style. In elementary grades, the Young Explorer series studies one topic for the whole year, and several ages can work together about two days a week with notebooking journals. Middle and high school courses are textbook-based, with self-paced online and live online class options. | A secular science curriculum from Pandia Press built around hands-on labs and projects. Level 1 (grades K-6) covers Life, Earth and Environment, Astronomy, Chemistry, and Physics, and Level 2 (grades 6-10) continues with Biology, Earth and Environment, and Astronomy. Lessons pair short readings with experiments and lab sheets. |
